A Man’s Guide to Doing Laundry

A Man's Guide to Doing Laundry

Let’s be honest:

Most men hate doing laundry. Why? Well, there can be many reasons, but one big reason is simply a lack of knowledge. Men aren’t typically taught how to do laundry.

So, let’s look at the steps to make laundry day at least less painful, if not an actual breeze.

Preparation

1. Schedule laundry time.

Allocate a specific day and time to do your laundry so it’s a no-brainer – no excuses, just do it.

2. Separate Items.

Sort everything out at laundry time. You’ll have one load for whites, one for colors, and one for socks and underwear.

3. Check Pockets.

Yes, really. Look through every item with a pocket. It’s worth it! All it takes is overlooking something important or expensive just one time…

The Washing Process

1. Use less product.

Repeat after me:
"More is not better." It's true about good food, medicine, and laundry detergent. Using too much will actually produce the opposite effect and leave your clothes permeated with laundry detergent and likely requiring a re-wash. Not what you want to be doing with your time.

2. Choose water temperature wisely.

Save the hot water cycle for clothes that need it, like socks, underwear, and pre-treated extra dirty clothes. Everything else can use cool or cold water.

3. Remove clothes promptly.

Don't let the clothes sit in the washing machine too long or they may begin to take on a damp, musty odor, as well as encourage wrinkles to set in.

The Drying Process

1. Clean the lint filter.

Do this before every single load. A clogged lint filter restricts airflow, which will not only increase drying time but is a fire hazard.

2. Use a lower dryer temperature.

Here again, less is more. High temperatures are hard on fabric; at best high temperatures will degrade your clothing more quickly, and at worst will shrink wool and cotton fabrics. Go with Medium or Low heat.

3. Use dryer balls.

There are many benefits to using unscented, all-natural wool dryer balls. For example, they:

  • Save you drying time by separating items and increasing airflow
  • Save you money because they will last through thousands of loads
  • Contain no fragrance. Now you don’t have to walk around smelling like Wildflowers or a Day at the Beach are healthier. Unscented dryer balls contain no harmful fragrance or other chemicals to irritate your skin
remove static and wrinkles. That means less (or no) ironing for you.

4. Empty the dryer quickly.

Leaving the load to sit will only cause wrinkles and even give them a musty smell if they haven't completely dried.

That's all there is to mastering laundry day, men. If the great and legendary Eric Clapton can do this humble chore, so can you!
